Skating on Thin Ice

Originally posted December 6, 2006

I posted this short anecdote on a couple of the boards I go to regularly, but I wanted to post it here too, so that if I needed a chuckle I could come here and read it!

There is a retention pond next to the building I live in and with the cold temps we've been having this week, it has iced over. Not solidly, but enough that it can hold the weight of the ducks and geese that live and stop there. As I took Nildë out for her morning constitutional I watched the Candadian geese slip-sliding their way across the pond! It was quite amusing... I was waiting for one to wipe out or go through the ice and take out a bunch of the other geese with him, but despite having to walk gingerly not one did. It was somewhat comforting to know that even the animal kingdom has to deal with the uncertainty of walking on thin ice just like us! LOL!

I'm going to try to take my camera with me tomorrow to see if I can catch them slip-slidin' away on the ice again!

And speaking of the water fowl visiting my next of the woods...er... suburb... the picture above is of a young blue heron (I think) that stopped off on his/her way south. I hope to see it back in the Spring!
