A Light in the Dark Places of the World

Originally published April 28, 2007

Life is not a 'brief candle.' It is a splendid torch that must be made to burn as brightly as possible before it is handed on to the next generation.
- George Bernard Shaw, Irish critic and playwright

I really like this quote a lot! It seems appropriate to the Shieldmaidens and it is appropriate to my own personal philosophy. This thought has been returning to me a lot as of late... my university motto (Wittenberg, where I went to school) is also: "Having Light We Pass It On To Others"

I never paid much attention to the motto while I was going to school, but each day for me is spent accepting the Light and doing what I can to reflect it outward for others to take in and use themselves - and in doing so passing it on to others as well.

For me that Light is Christ-centered, but I HOPE that it shines out to those who recognize that Light in their own traditions and use it in a similar way.

I don't think it is a coincidence that this theme continues to beckon me. The World needs as much Light as we can share... there are certainly many Dark places in the World that could use it right about now...
